It may not be an easy task to do that. You will have to improve your personality in several distinct ways so that you begin to command that respect. Among the various things you will need to do, the following are some of the things you just cannot ignore.
1. One of the ways in which you can treat people with respect is by respecting their time. If you have called your team for a meeting, make sure to be there at least 5 minutes earlier than others. If, for any reason, you get delayed, then call ahead and apologize. It is completely wrong to be late and then not acknowledging that fact, though you would have definitely pointed out someone else's tardiness.
2. Always return calls. It does not matter if you haven't yet made your decision. Call them and inform them that you are still thinking. If you don't call them back at all, they assume that you are taking them for granted.
3. Wish people around you whenever it is relevant. A 'Good Day' is always appreciated, especially if it comes from a leader. Wish them on their festivals, even if they celebrate different festivals than you do.
4. Thank people when they do a good job. Even if they are paid for their job, thanks are in order because they could have performed worse than they did. If you see the bright side in everything, people begin seeing the bright side in you.
These are some ways in which you tell people, 'You guys are all important to me. We are in this together.' It is only when you are able to generate this feeling, are you climbing the rungs of elegant leadership courage and earning that much-needed respect.
